We provide child and family treatment across age ranges. With advanced training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, we are experienced in treating all types of childhood onset conditions. Not only is childhood and adolescence an important period of brain development, it is often a stressful period in life. Due to a host of factors including genetics, brain formation and environmental stress, children may suffer from psychiatric symptoms that range from mild to severe. These include developmental disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), anxiety, depression, OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), PTSD (Posttraumatic Stress Disorder), Bipolar Disorder, and Psychotic Disorders including Schizophrenia.
One in 5 children between the ages of 13 and 18 have or will have a serious mental illness, and 50% of all mental illness begin by age 14. Due to several factors, the average delay between the onset of symptoms and intervention is 8-10 years. Untreated childhood illness can not only have a lifelong impact, but children also run the risk of dropping out of school, attempting suicide, or getting into legal trouble.
At Minhas Psychiatry we are experienced in treating and managing all of these illnesses. Our approach is holistic – we make sure to acknowledge all of the factors that may be contributing to the illness, and our treatment plans address these factors in a systematic way. Childhood onset illnesses can have a deep impact on individuals and the family, and early intervention is critical – the earlier treatment is made available, the better the prognosis.
